NIFL LEAGUE CUP ( PRELIMINARY ROUND)    Saturday 04/08/18    DUNDELA 1 - 3 KNOCKBREDA            Breda were one of 8 teams drawn in this preliminary round bringing an early start to their 2018/2019 season.   The game at Wilgar Park saw several familiar faces in the opposition camp adding some additional interest with the opening half played at a fast tempo. Breda's pace going forward was troubling the home defence and  good deliveries from Fra Rice freekicks saw centre back Jamie Patterson come close on 24 minutes and 33minutes.    On 36 minutes Rice and Brendan Bennett combined down the right and the latter's low cross was met by centre forward Zach Barr whose shot was deflected for a corner. After a scoreless first half Breda had an early goal disallowed for offside but deservedly took the lead on 60 minutes following a great run by MOM Ryan Newberry whose decisive pass played in Bennett who shot low into the net. 10 minutes later Breda added to the scoreline when Tiernan McNicholl played in Newberry who finished well from inside the box. Breda added a third goal when , following a blocked effort McNicoll followed up to tap the ball into the net. Whilst initially disallowed for offside due to another Breda player , the referee rightly overruled that decision and awarded the goal. Breda keeper Dean Smyth , who had earlier made a great one handed save was finally  beaten minutes from the end with a consolation goal for the Duns. All at Breda send best wishes, for a full and speedy recovery,  to their former player Daniel Burns who had to be helped off injured during this game. Next up for Breda an opening home League game on Saturday 11/08/18 at Breda Park kickoff 3pm. Opponents Larne will be overwhelming favourites for that game and the League title so come along and support the home team.
BLUEFIN CHAMPIONSHIP    Saturday 11/08/18      KNOCKBREDA 1 - 1 LARNE Bright skies and a large support greeted Larne for their first league game of the season against massive underdogs Knockbreda. There was however an unexpected gloomy outlook ahead for those visiting fans. Pre-match also brought an unusual measured  event verging on paranoia -  was that really necessary lads?! The opening exchanges were fairly even with both teams having chances. Larne did however take the lead on 22 minutes when Breda's defence failed to deal with a ball on their bye line. a pass cut back finding Martin Donnelly in the box with time to control and shoot left footed low into the net. That goal separated the teams at halftime. The second half began in deteriorating weather conditions with the visitors having more ball possession. However after a good passing move involving Ryan Newberry the ball was controlled by Brendan Bennett on the edge of the box. His trickery saw him outwit his marker then firing an unstoppable shot high into the net for the equaliser on 52 minutes. The visitors pressed for a winning goal but Breda's defence stood firm and the home team almost won the game in added time when substitute Rhys Clelland broke free but shot narrowly past the post. A solid start to this years campaign by the Breda boys on the green green grass of home. Keep it up boys ! Next up for Breda an away League game v Limavady Utd , Saturday 18/08/18 kickoff 3pm.
BLUEFIN CHAMPIONSHIP   Saturday 18/08/18    Limavady Utd 1 - 2 KNOCKBREDA Breda's away League campaign got underway following a solid start to their season. After an even and fairly scrappy opening , Breda took the lead on 15 minutes when a long ball thouth the middle by Gary Warwick was controlled by Brendan Bennett on the edage of the box. As usual his first touch was excellent giving hm the space to fire low into the corner of the net. The home team responded well to this setback and created problems for Breda's defence with good pace and movement. Breda keeper Dean Smyth made great saves on 20 minutes and 30 minutes to deny an equalise but was finally beaten on 33 minutes when a break down Breda's left saw a shot rebound off the post and put into the net by Carlin the home team centre forward. All square at halftime with Breda second best for the remainder of the first half. No doubt with advice from the manager and coaches Breda started the 2nd half well , with an early goal by Warwick disallowed for offside. Following a corner by Warwick , Breda did take the lead on 58 minutes when his cross was met by a stooping header from 8 yards out by Breda centre back Robbie McNulty. Breda then started to create chances with their attacking pace but did not capitalise on  2 or 3 very good chances but held on to take all 3 points. Next up for Breda a home league game v Carrick Rangers on Saturday 25/08/18 at Breda Park kickoff 3pm.
BLUEFIN CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday 25/08/18 KNOCKBREDA 0 - 2 CARRICK RANGERS Breda came unstuck in their attempt to extend their unbeaten start to the season against a solid, resolute defensive display by the visitors. The opening play was scrappy and Breda gifted the first goal when their defence was caught napping by a quick throw in into their box to meet a darting run by Michael Smith who controlled the ball and shot low into the corner of the net. Breda's best chances in the half were headers by centre forward Zach Barr on 26 minutes and 42 minutes although Rangers nearly scored a second when a Breda defender's clearance hit their post. The 2nd half was more of the same with Breda struggling to break down the Rangers defence and the visitors increased their lead on 56 minutes. A poor clearance saw Michael Smith pick up the ball in midfield and a slick passing move saw him clear in the box to finish well to give Rangers all 3 points. A disappointing lacklustre performance all round by Breda who travel to The Showgrounds on Tues 28/08/18 kick off 7.45pm to face Newry  City in Round 2 of the Bet MacLean League Cup.
Bet McLean League Cup 2nd Round - 28/08/18              Newry City 1 - 0 Knockbreda Breda made 5 changes from their previous starting line up and came under early pressure with keeper Dean Smyth called in to early action with a fine block save on 3 minutes. The home team were causing problems down both flanks with their movement and pace although Breda had some dangerous attacks with no final delivery. Newry took the lead after 30 minutes when a break down their left saw a good low cross met first time in the box for a good finish. Breda responded well and should have equalised 2 minutes later when Brendan Bennett got to the bye line with a great cross to the back post finding Tiernan McNicholl in space but he headed wide. Breda started the 2nd half well with Bennett again causing problems and a great cross from the right on 50 minutes found Darius Roohi on the 6 yard line but he delayed his shot and the ball was cleared. 2 minutes later a Bennett corner was met with a glancing header by Jordan Baker but cleared off the line. Breda continued to cause problems for the home team who had less attacking threat in the second half and again came close to equalising on 86 minutes when a deflected shot by McNicholl was pushed away by the keeper. Best of luck to Newry City in the next round. Next up for Breda an away league game to Dergview on Saturday 01/09/18 kickoff 3pm.
BLUEFIN CHAMPIONSHIP   Saturday 15/09/18      Ballinamallard 0 - 1 Knockbreda Breda rang the changes for their visit to Ferney Park looking to end their 4 game losing streak. Making debuts in the starting eleven  were Liam McKenna , Ciaran Dobbin and Ricky Copeland and all 3 played their part , with all the other players in securing all 3 points. This was a real test for a Breda team who showed great character and determination coupled with some good attacking play. The back 4 , with keeper Dean Smyth , defended resolutely and particular mention about debutant Ricky Copeland whose performance at centre back , along with his central defensive partner and captain , Jamie Patterson , was particularly impressive. Breda had the better of the first half with Brendan Bennett and another debutant Ciaran Dobbin causing problems on the flanks for the home team and young Dobbin almost scored on 7 minutes when his shot from the edge of the box went just over. Breda's midfield worked tirelessly as did centre forward Zach Barr who led the line very well and on  33 minutes his cross into the box found Bennett whose shot was parried by the home keeper with Bennett hitting the rebound well over. The home team had some dangerous breaks in the second half and the game could have gone either way but Breda secured all 3 points on 84 minutes when a ball forward was chested down by Barr as he ran into the box. under pressure from defenders his next touch saw him lose control with the home keeper diving on the ball some 6 yards out. However he then lost the ball as Barr slid in and somehow Zach  got a touch on the ball which rolled into the net. Breda survived an all out onslaught by the home team in the final minutes and on the break almost scored again when Ryan Newberry shot narrowly past. Next up for Breda a trip to Seaview on Tues 18/09/18 for a County Antrim Shield tie with Crusaders kick off 7.45 pm followed by a home League game v Loughgall on Saturday 22/09/18 kickoff 3pm.
Toal Bookmakers County Antrim Shield   Tuesday 18/09/18    CRUSADERS 2 - 1 KNOCKBREDA Against a strong home team and current holders, Breda put on an impressive display and were always in this game. Breda almost went ahead early on when centre forward David Fearon robbed a defender 30 yards out and on advancing hit a great curling effort from 20 yards well saved by the keeper. The Crues went ahead on 19 minutes when a shot from just inside their box was well saved by keeper Dean Smyth but the rebound was hit into the net off a post. Breda maintained their composure with a solid defensive performance led by captain Jamie Patterson and were also dangerous on the break. Breda levelled on 35 minutes following good work by Fearon who played Brendan Bennett in the box, He beat his marker and fired a great shot into the net from 15 yards. On 50 minutes Breda keeper Smyth made a great onehanded save tipping over a well hit strike from the edge of the box. Breda did however go to sleep at the resultant corner with a header from 6 yards restoring the home team lead.   Breda did however keep battling to the end with a performance that should give the squad confidence for the upcoming league games. Bluefin Championship   Saturday 22/09/18   KNOCKBREDA 3 - 2 LOUGHGALL On the back of 2 difficult away games in 7 days , Breda struggled to gain a foothold in this game. A great one handed save by Breda keeper Dean Smyth denied the visitors an opening goal  and it was Breda who almost took the lead on the half hour when Brendan Bennett hit a post from 6 yards. After another great save by the home keeper on 31 minutes it was no real surprise that the visitors did take the lead on 42 minutes when , after a break down their left , a cross found Andrew Hoey who shot low into the net from 12 yards. Breda spurned two chances to equalise before halftime and after the restart missed another good chance before the visitors extended their lead on 55 minutes with a penalty converted by Andrew Hoey  for his second goal after a foul in the box. Breda then introduced 2 substitute forwards , Jordan Baker and David Fearon,  who changed the course of the game. After good work on their right , Fearon's low cross was tapped into the net by Baker on 67 minutes and the same duo combined on 70 minutes when Fearon's headed flick on was guided into the net by Baker. The comeback was completed 6 minutes later when Fearon controlled a flick on from Baker and shot low into the net from 10 yards. Next up an away league game v PSNI on Saturday 29/09/18 kick off 3pm.
Bluefin Championship   Saturday 29/09/18   PSN1 1 - 3 KNOCKBREDA Breda made it 3 league wins in a row with a great team performance at a very difficult place to get points. A good opening to the game saw Breda take an early lead on 4 minutes when a freekick out wide from Ryan Newberry saw centre back Ricky Copeland head in powerfully from 12 yards to score his first goal for the Club. Buoyed by this Breda created further chances in the next 20 minutes , adding a second goal when Newberry was fouled in the box with Ryan himself taking the spot kick and drilling the ball low into the corner. The home team had a chance just before the break with a freekick on the edge of the box. Ex Breda man Jake McNeill shot low into the corner with Dean Smyth making a fine one handed save. Breda again started the 2nd half on the front foot , David Fearon coming close on 50 minutes with Jordan Baker then scoring the third 3 minutes later with the goal of the game. Jordan received the ball from Brendan Bennett and some 20 yards out took a touch and rifled  an unstoppable early shot into the net. After this Breda were reduced to 10 men when midfielder Paddy Cafolla was harshly given a 2nd yellow card and despite increasing pressure from the home team , resulting in a consolation goal on 76 minutes Breda held on comfortably to take all 3 points.
