Irish Cup 5th round Saturday 05/01/19 KNOCKBREDA 1 - 2 STRABANE ATHLETIC Breda entered and exited the Irish Cup today beaten by NI Intermediate League side Starbane Athletic. Spurred on by a large , enthusiastic and vocal support the visitors went ahead on 5 min following a rash tackle by a Breda defender just inside their box. Veteran striker Warner Mullen coolly dispatched the spot kick. Breda were given a gift equaliser on 10 minutes when a visiting defender attempted a pass across his 18 yard line , only finding Darius Roohi who side footed into the net. Breda missed chances to take the lead in the first half and paid the price on 71 minutes when Mullen scored his 2nd goal from close range. A well deserved victory for the visitors and we wish them well in the next round. Up for Breda next is an away League game v Dundela on Saturday 12/01/19 at Wilgar Park kickoff 3pm.
Bluefin Championship Saturday 12/01/19 Dundela 1 - Knockbreda 1 In very blustery conditions the game started at a high tempo with both teams having some difficulty adapting to the conditions.Breda were making inroads particularly down the host's right side with Jordan Baker and Patrick Cafolla having shots saved on 23 and 25 minutes. It was the home side however who almost took the lead on 26 minutes when an initial effort from a freekick centrally 20 yards out was blocked by the Breda wall with a rebound shot net bound until a great save by Dean Smyth in the Breda goal , palming the ball over the bar. Breda deservedly took the lead on 58 minutes when a penalty was awarded for a foul in the box with Jordan Baker sending the keeper the wrong way. With Breda defending well , the Duns were pressing for an equaliser which came in the 90th minute when a shot was blocked by Smyth but unfortunately the rebound was headed in from 6 yards. Breda pushed for a winner in added time and did succeed in scoring from a corner. The referee initially awarded a goal but then , strangely changed his decision to a freekick for the home side. It is unclear why he did so and had that incident taken place at the other end perhaps the referee would have stood by his initial decision. So Breda will finish in the bottom six and next up for them is the last game before the split - an important home League game v Limavady at Breda Park Sat 19th Jan kickoff 2pm.
Bluefin Championship Saturday 19/01/19 Knockbreda 0 - Limavady 1 With both teams unable to make a top 6 place this last day fixture before the League split was still an important one with both having an eye on avoiding potential play off / relegation spots. The frenetic opening reflected this with both teams having only a handful of half chances. The 2nd half continued in the same vein with the deadlock broken on 60 minutes by the visitors with a shot from inside the box looping over Breda keeper Dean Smyth. Breda made attacking substitutions and pressed hard but could not break down a stubborn visitors defence. Bredas young squad now face an important round of 10 games in the post split period to initially ensure Championship status and look to finish top of that mini League. The post split fixtures can be seen on this website and first up is an away game v PSNI on Saturday 26/01/19 kick off 2PM.
BLUEFIN CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday 26/01/19 PSNI 0 - 3 KNOCKBREDA The opening fixture in their post split games saw Breda dominate from the kick off playing with pace and confidence. Breda took the lead from a corner on 6 minutes , flicked on at the near post and headed in at the far post by Jordan Baker. The following 20 minutes saw Breda nearly add to their lead when Paddy Cafolla hit a great 20 yard strike just wide on 12 minutes with Nathan Mcveigh coming close on 18 and 23 minutes. Breda’s second goal did come on 30 minutes when a home defender failed to deal with a long ball and the ball was controlled by David Fearon who tok it round the keeper and into the empty net. Breda should have increased their lead on 36 minutes when a good passing move saw Ryan Newberry free in the box with his shot from 10 yards saved. Breda sealed the win 5 minutes into the 2nd half when goal machine Feraon controlled the ball on the edge of the box and fired low into the net. Newberry came very close direct from a freekick 20 yards out on 64 minutes with Breda comfortably seeing the game out to take all 3 points. No game next week for Breda due to the Irish Cup with Breda returning to League action on Saturday 09/02/19 with a home game , at Breda Park , v Dergview kick off 2pm..
Bluefin Championship KNOCKBREDA 0 - 4 DERGVIEW Both sides missed a chance in the opening 15 minutes to take the lead. The visitors did however go ahead on 23 minutes when poor defending led to Emmet McGuckan firing in from 6 yards. The lead was extended 2 minutes later when a knockdown saw Adam Buchanan shoot low into the net from 20 yards. Breda made changes before half time and applied pressure in the 2nd half but were unable to break down the visitor's stubborn defence. Dergview sealed the points late on with 2 further goals , a penalty from Emmet McGuckan and lastly from player manager Ivan Sproule, to give the visitors a resounding win. A very disappointing result and performance from Breda. Next up an away League game v Loughgall on Saturday 16/02/19 kick off 3pm.
Bluefin Championship Saturday 16/02/19 Loughgall 1 - 1 Knockbreda Breda looked to bounce back from the previous week's home defeat and showed a willingness for the battle in the opening frenetic exchanges. Their cause was boosted by the dismissal of a home defender on 22 minutes when a great penetrating run by Breda's Paddy Cafolla from the halfway line towards the box was ended by a foul with the referee deciding it was a last man challenge. Despite this the teams turned round goalless at halftime. Breda's anticipated dominance of the second period was however cut short on 52 minutes when the home team took the lead. From a corner the ball was flicked on and although cleared the ball was deemed to have crossed the line. Breda continued to press , creating some chances particularly down their right. The introduction of 2 attacking substitutes kept Breda on the offensive and eventually brought an equaliser on 80 minutes when the home keeper parried a shot from Ricky Copeland following a corner , with substitute Darius Roohi firing in the rebound from 2 yards. Next up for Breda another away League game v Ballyclare Comrades at Dixon Park on Saturday 23/02/19 kick off 3pm.
Bluefin Championship Saturday 23/02/19 Ballyclare Comrades 1 - 1 Knockbreda Breda got off to a disastrous start in this game when , after 20 seconds , a cross from their left was inadvertently headed into his own net by centre back Ricky Copeland while stretching to clear the cross. Breda recovered well from that early setback and had an even share of possession in the first half. Turning round a goal down Breda then dominated the second half but missed good chances to not only draw level but take the lead. However they were rewarded on 87 minutes when , following a scramble n the box from a corner , Fra Rice shot home the equaliser from 10 yards. Breda had a further chance near the end when Paddy Cafiolla broke clear , knocking the ball past the home keeper who dangerously took the player out , being rightly red carded. Next up for Breda a home League game v Limavady Utd on Saturday 09/03/19 kick off 3pm.
Bluefin Championship Saturday 09/03/19 Knockbreda 1 - 3 Limavady A very nervy and scrappy first half by both teams in very difficult conditions saw the second half open without score. The first goal in this game was always going to be vital and on the hour mark the visitors went ahead in very contentious circumstances when Breda's keeper Dean Smyth rose to claim a high ball on his goal line and was bundled over by a visiting player with the referee deeming that the challenge was fair and that the ball had crossed the line. Quite how the officials made that decision is baffling. However the visitors capitalised on that gift .and scored further goals on 64 and 70 minutes with David Fearon scoring a consolation goal for Breda on 81 minutes.
Bluefin Championship Saturday 16/03/19 Knockreda 5 - 2 PSNI Breda had the better of early exchanges in this vital League game and took the lead on 16 minutes. A long throw was flicked on by Jordan Baker and met bravely at the back post with a stooping header into the net from 2 yards by Ciaran Dobbin. The home team missed chances to extend their first half lead but had keeper Dean Smyth to thank with a great save from the visitor's Dylan Wilson on 30 minutes. 2 minutes after the restart the visitors drew level when a great cross from Wilson was met from 6 yards by Mark Anderson who headed into the corner of the net.Breda regained the lead on 49 minutes with the goal of the game. A one touch passing move involving 4 players saw substitute Darius Roohi in space 10 yards out from goal and he smashed his shot high into the net. 6 minutes later that lead was extended when full back Karl Hamill blasted into the net from the edge of the box. Breda sealed the game with further goals on 61 minutes and 69 minutes when David Fearon scored from the spot and Ciaran Dobbin was played in for his 2nd goal.10 minutes from the end Mark Anderson scored his 2nd goal of the game. Next up for Breda an away League game v Dergview on Saturday 06/04/19 kick off 3pm.
Bluefin Championship Saturday 13/04/19 KNOCKBREDA 0 - 0 LOUGHGALL There are very few scoreless draws at Breda Park but this encounter was totally dictated by the weather with a gale blowing straight down the pitch. Playing with that in the first half the visitors dominated with Breda defending well although Breda had 2 chances to score the best being a great run from Paddy Cafolla from the halfway line past defenders and shooting just over from 18 yards. Breda dominated the second half hitting the bar from a corner , missing a headed chance and having a goal disallowed for offside. Next up for Breda a final home League game of the season v Ballyclare Comrades at Breda Park on Saturday 20/04/19 kickoff 3pm.
Bluefin Championship Saturday 20 /04/19 KNOCKBREDA 2 - 1 BALLYCLARE COMRADES All the pressure was on Breda in this game looking to avoid the bottom 2 league places. A nervy opening saw the visitors denied on 4 minutes by great work by Breda keeper Lee Windrum with a Comrades player through on goal. Breda's David Fearon had a shot saved by the Comrade's keeper on 13 minutes with Windrum again coming to Breda's rescue on 36 mins saving a close range effort. Breda's leading scorer Fearon scored on 39 minutes when he turned his marker and shot low into the net from 10 yards. The pressure was however back on when the visitors equalised from close range 2 mins later. Both teams had chances in the 2nd half with Breda keeper Windrum making a wonder save on 60 mins somehow getting a hand to a close range volley and over the bar.Breda's top scorer Fearon scored his second goal on 85 minutes. Following a good passing move he again turned his marker in the box and fired into the net giving Breda all 3 points and ensuring Championship football for next season. Some big performances by the team today especially the keeper and back 4 led superbly by captain Fra Brennan and of course big Deco scoring the vital goals. So well done to Lee , all the players and staff for maintaining Breda's Championship status for next season. Final League game is Saturday 27/04/19 , a trip to Limavady Utd , kick off 3pm. There is a bus going to this game leaving Breda Park at 12pm
Bluefin Championship Saturday 27/04/19 Limavady 3 - 0 Knockbreda Breda's last League game of this season was an important one for the hosts who scored 3 second half goals without response to win all 3 points. They were however relegated. Breda had, the previous week, secured their Championship status for next season.
