NIFL CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday 07/10/17 KNOCKBREDA 0 - 1 INSTITUTE With Institute on Breda's tails at the league summit , this clash opened cagily but was brought to life on 4 minutes when the home defence were slow to react to a break down their left and a pass across their box saw Gareth Brown fire an unstoppable left foot shot high into the net. Breda responded well with wide men Stephen Cockcroft and Ciaran Murray a constant threat and, on 12 minutes, the former cut inside the box and and when tackled the defender did not appear to play the ball but a penalty shout was turned down. Breda continued to press but almost went 2 down with a headed effort just past their post. Another Cockcroft cross on 39 minutes was met by Breda's centre back Ryan Aurthur but well saved by the away keeper. Steven Curry for the visitors should have sealed the game in the second half as Breda kept pressing with a couple of decent chances. On 60 minutes a direct frre kick by Murray , from all of 35 yards , was punched away by the keeper and on 83 minutes a further chance fell to Breda's Karl Hamill whose shot was blocked and the visitors held out for a big 3 points. Interestingly Breda's last 2 results mirror the opening 2 legaue games of the season after which Breda put 5 wins together so I repeat would do nicely !! Next up a home league game v Larne on Saturday 14/10/17 kick off 3pm.
NIFL CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday 14/10/17 KNOCKBREDA 1 - 3 LARNE The visitors started much better than a sluggish Breda causing problems with their counter attacks at pace. After a fairly even opening half hour a long ball centrally saw Breda's defenders back pedalling with an attempted headed back pass falling sort and although Breda keeper Ferguson did well to make a block , the ball fell kindly to Darren Stuart who rolled the ball into an empty net. Breda equalised 2 minutes later when a high ball into the box , from Lewis Irwin , evaded the keeper and nestled in the net. Breda came close to taking the lead 2 minutes into the second half with a great leap and strong header from Michael Halliday going narrowly past with the substitute keeper, Conor Devlin , well beaten. On 62 minutes the visitors again took the lead when catching Breda with another counter attack finished well by David Scullion and sealed the game 3 minutes later when , following a corner , David Abe had the freedom of the 6 yard box to head in. Breda's woeful day was completed in the final 15 minutes with 3 sendings off - Jamie Patterson, Willie McBurney & Ciaran Murray. So a very bad day for Breda with a poor all round team performance which can happen but totally unacceptable ( and embarrassing) is the behaviour and indiscipline of some players which those involved must address immediately. Next up for Breda , an away league game v Newry City , on Saturday 21/10/17 kick off 3pm.
NIFL CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday 21/10/17 NEWRY CITY 1 - 0 KNOCKBREDA A depleted Breda travelled to Newry on a stormy day with a heavy playing surface. With the elements at their backs in the opening half , Breda started brightly with good raids down both flanks , without really testing the home keeper. Their one real effort  came direct from a 20 yard direct freekick by Mark Cooling which was punched away by the keeper. Breda did not test the home keeper enough and on 29 minutes fell behind to a soft goal when a break down Breda's left saw a cross somehow reach the one home forward in their box and he finished well. Breda did come into the game more  in the second half without creating much although the home team also struggled with the wind at their backs.  Another disappointing defeat for Breda who have now reached the halfway point in the regular league season and , given the position at a similar time last season, most at the Club would readily , pre-season, have taken  their current position  with a points total of 17 , with 5 wins and 2 draws and 2nd place in the table. Next up for Breda a home League game v PSNI FC on Saturday 28/10/17 , kick off 3pm.
NIFL CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday 28/10/17 KNOCKBREDA 3 - O PSNI FC Breda rang the changes for this game , the starting eleven including their 4 youngest players , Cafolla, Hamill, Irwin and Youngand boy did they deliver. A strong cross wind was not conducive to good football with both teams struggling to adapt. The visitors had a couple of early chances dealt with by Breda keeper David Ferguson. In a 20 minute burst in the first half Breda then put the game to bed. On 23 minutes Paddy Cafolla broke from the halfway line passing to Conall Young Conall Young and has pass to veteran Ryan Newberry saw his superb back heel play Cafolla into the box to close in and drive left footed into the net. 7 minutes later a great pass down the side line by Cafolla, after winning the ball on the halfway line again, freed Lewis Irwin whose first time cross was collected by Newberry on the edge of the box. He created a yard of space and fired an unstoppable left footed shot into the net. Breda had another goal disallowed on 35 minutes for a dubious foul on the keeper before scoring again 5 minutes later when Conall Young played a great 1-2 with not so young centre forward Ricky Rutherford broke into the box and his low cross from the bye line was met first time at the back post by LewisIrwin for a tap in. On 43 minutes Breda almost made it 4 when a direct free kick from Newberry thumped the crossbar with the follow up effort by Rutherford tipped over by PSNI keeper Williamson. After this whirlwind first half the second was a much calmer affair with Breda holding out for a 3-0 win. Next up for Breda , an away league game v Limavady Utd on Saturday 04/11/17 , kick off 3pm.
NIFL CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday 04/11/17 LIMAVADY UTD 3 - 1 KNOCKBREDA Both teams struggled to play football in a frenetic opening half with the ball being given away a lot and the ball not moving freely on the playing surface. Breda edged the first half creating several openings particularly down their right flank with the final pass / cross disappointing. In the second half Breda did however capitalise from that same right flank when Karl Hamill broke into the home box and laid a low pass across the 6 yard box for Lewis Irwin to finish with a fist time shot on 65 minutes. However Breda failed to hold on to that lead when 1 minute later the home team equalised. After that Breda had a great chance to retake the lead when a great cross from Ryan Newberry found Ricky Rutherford alone in the opposition 6 yard box but his header was saved. The home team then pressurised Breda and were rewarded with 2 quickfire goals on 84 and 86 minutes to take all 3 points. Next up for Breda a home league game v Portadown on Saturday 11/11/17 kick off 2pm.
NIFL CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday 11/11/17 KNOCKBREDA 1 - 2 PORTADOWN No quarter was asked or given in this game as both sides looked to get back to winning ways. The opening was fairly even with no real chances made until 14 th minute when the visitors hit a post with a header from a free kick. Breda responded 8 minutes later with a good headed knockdown by centre forward Ricky Rutherford to Ryan Newberry who shot over the bar from 25 yards. In the last  10 minutes of the first half Breda missed chances to go ahead. On 34 minutes a great run forward by fullback  Karl Hamill saw him play in Paddy Cafolla  who drove into the box with his shot well saved. Hamill himself then missed a chance on 43 minutes when the ball dropped to him in the box but he pulled his shot wide as did Lewis Irwin one minute latter when he was played into the box. It did seem that one goal either way might be enough as the 2nd half got under way with the game bursting into life when the visitors took the lead on 59 minutes.Following a short freekick a cross into the box was met by a flicked header into the corner of Breda's net past the despairing dive of keeper David Ferguson. Breda responded well and equalised 2 minutes later when Cafolla saw Irwin make a forward run and played a long through ball. With his marker close by young Irwin showed great control by pulling the ball away from the defender some 20 yards out leaving him in space. He looked up and hit a glorious first time curling shot high into the net with the away keeper rooted to the spot. Breda's joy was shortlived when a rather soft penalty was awarded 2 minutes later for a foul in their box with the kick coolly dispatched for the visitors to regain the lead. Breda then had a mountain to climb when midfielder Nathan McVeigh received a straight red on 67 minutes. To their credit the 10 men kept going forward and the last few minutes saw them pepper the away goal but unable to score although Rutherford shot agonisingly just past the  post right at the end.  Next up for Breda an away league game v Larne on Saturday 18/11/17 kickoff 3pm.
NIFL CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday 18/11/17 LARNE 3 - 1 KNOCKBREDA Breda started brightly with runs by Newberry and Cockcroft featuring but the first chance of the game fell to the home team on 4 minutes when Breda gave the ball away mid way in their own half but a tame shot was easily saved. Larne had another chance on 11 minutes from a near post corner flicked narrowly past. The home team did deservedly take the lead 5 minutes later when a good move down their left led to a pass into the box ( has to be said borderline offside) with a good finish from 12 yards. Breda were weathering a storm after that but dug in and on 23 minutes equalised when Halliday and Rutherford combined with the latter passing to Hamill who had the freedom of the home box to take a touch a fire low into the net. Breda were guilty of giving the ball away too cheaply throughout this game and the home team almost went ahead on 28 minutes due to that. They did however regain the lead on 34 minutes when a rather soft penalty was awarded. the spot kick was well saved by Ferguson diving to his left but the ball was hit into the net by a home player following up and Breda players very slow to react. Breda nearly drew level on 51 minutes when Hamill , having pushed forward found space at the back post but he fired well over from 6 yards. The home team secured the points 20 minutes from the end when , following a break, with Breda pushing up, Arthur tried to block a low driven cross and was unluckily to see the ball end up in the net. It was a very disappointing result for Breda who gave the ball away far to much throughout the game to ease any pressure on the home team. Next up for Breda an away league game v Institute on Saturday 25/11/18 2pm kick off. This game will be played at Wilton Park , Limavady Road ,Londonderry the temporary home of our opponents.
NIFL CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday 23/12/17 KNOCKBREDA 1 - 2 H&W WELDERS At a cold and blustery Breda Park both sets of players struggled to add much pre-festive quality to the game which had the expected aggression. Both had an early chance to take the lead but largely cancelled each other out in the first half hour. A moment of quality saw Breda take the lead on 39 minutes when full back Karl Hamill collected the ball on the edge of the away box, ghosted past 2 defenders and , from a very tight angle, fired a low shot into the net off the far post. Breda looked set to take that lead into the 2nd half but gave the Welders a goal out of nothing when ,looking to mount a dangerous counter attack , they gave the ball away in their own half leading to a corner. From this Welders centre back Dan McMurray rose high at the far post to head the ball down and into the net. The 2nd half continued in the same vein with a draw looking likely but , out of context with the overall game, the visitors took all 3 points when forward Lukasz Gwiazda won a chase for the ball down the left , cut inside and from the 18 yard line fired a curling high shot into the top corner. Next up for Breda an away league game v Lurgan Celtic Saturday 30/12/17 2pm kick off. Happy New Year to all players, supporters and Committee.
NIFL CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday 30/12/17 LURGAN CELTIC 1 - 1 KNOCKBREDA On a heavy , slippy, surface Breda got off to a bad start with a needless freekick given away on the edge of their box. The ball was then played square across the 18 yard line leading to a first time shot well blocked by Breda centre back Karl Hamill who closed down the shot from 2 yards away. The well placed referee however gave a penalty for handball which was a very very harsh decision as no arms were out and the player himself maintaining the ball did not even strike his arm. The penalty was well taken but Breda quickly got over this and started to have the better of the first half. On 8 minutes a freekick into the home box saw the ball flicked on with Michael Halliday finishing well with a looped header over the keeper. In the last 10 minutes of the first half Breda spurned good chances to take the lead with Nathan McVeigh shooting over on 35 minutes . 4 minutes later Lewis Irwin broke free down the right side and his high cross was met by Ryan Newberry's head , the ball just going past the post. Newberry again came close on 42 minutes when his drive was cleraed off the line. The home team pressed more in the 2nd half especially after the red card dismissal of Jamie Patterson on 52 minutes but the game finished all square with no further goals.
